Fix a Faulty Light Switch

If your light switch does not function well, flickers whenever it is turned on, or even seems to be loose or tight, then maybe you need to repair or replace the light switch yourself. There are certain cases wherein the problem is just very basic that anyone can actually do something about it.

But for this article, you will be learning how to repair and replace your faulty light switch properly and safely.

You should be certain that your switch is the problem before you begin working on any repair. The common signs are as follows:

• No light comes on when you turn the switch on
• Lights that flicker when the switch is operated
• A humming noise is emitted by the switch
• The switch is not secure, sticks or does not click when you operate it
• The faceplate shows signs of discoloration or gives off a burnt smell

In such cases, there may be a fault within the switch itself.

Priority one – safety.
Always disconnect power before performing any work on an electrical part:

Disconnect the circuit breaker for the lighting circuit

Check by switching on and making sure no lights turn on

Use a non-contact voltage tester to verify that the wiring is disconnected from power sources, if possible

Do not repair anything while connected to live power.

Remove the screws holding the switch faceplate onto the wall using a screwdriver:

• Pull out the switch gently to reveal the wires behind it
• Photograph the arrangement of the wires to assist in putting them back together

There is usually one live wire (brown/red), one neutral wire (blue/black), and sometimes an earth wire (green/yellow).
