Introduction
Hanging a mirror or a big shelf can seem like a really tough job. If you have the right stuff, it is actually pretty easy. If you want to put a mirror in the hallway or some strong shelves in the kitchen, you need to make sure they are hung properly.
This is important because you do not want them to fall and hurt someone or break. In this article, we will show you how to hang mirrors and shelves on different kinds of walls. We will make sure you do it in a way that does not damage the walls, and the mirrors and shelves do not fall off later.
Before you start making any holes, you need to know what type of wall you have:
* Solid Walls (Brick or Masonry)
These walls are typical in older homes in the UK.
They are good for hanging objects.
To hang things, use wall plugs and masonry screws.
* Stud Walls (Plasterboard with Timber Studs)
You find these walls in homes and internal walls.
They can hold weight if you fix into a stud.
If not, you need plasterboard fixings.
* Dot & Dab Walls
This is plasterboard stuck to a wall, with blobs of glue.
These walls can hold weight. Make sure your fixings go into the solid parts.
The success of your project depends on choosing the correct fixings for your wall and the item’s weight:
|
Wall Type |
Fixing Type |
Max Load (Estimate) |
|
Solid Wall |
Wall plug + heavy-duty screw/anchor |
30kg+ per fixing |
|
Stud Wall |
Screws directly into timber studs |
15–25kg per stud |
|
Plasterboard |
GripIt, toggle bolts, or spring toggles |
10–20kg per fixing |
Top Tip: Use two or more fixings spaced evenly across the item to distribute weight and improve stability.
